Braiding Indigenous Futures

Program Vision

We support Indigenous-led efforts that help communities heal from trauma, (re)connect with their culture and traditions, and become stewards once again of their ancestral homelands.

Program Mission

The Braiding Indigenous Futures Program supports work by Indigenous communities to nurture healing from, and increase accountability for, harm caused by colonization, structural racism, and state violence.

Program Goals

Healing, liberation and self-determination by and for Indigenous communities

Narrative shifts that expand public consciousness of the impact of colonization and the need to address historical and intergenerational trauma

To reach our program goals we focus on four areas:

    • Resourcing Movement Builders – funding established organizations that prioritize building power and developing leadership to create a stronger ecosystem of support for Indigenous communities
    • Restore and Reclaim – supporting efforts to help communities heal from trauma (e.g. Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives, boarding schools) and (re)connect with their culture through the revitalization of languages, practices and traditions.
    • Climate, Land and Water Protection – supporting efforts to address climate change, safeguard the rights and well-being of communities in the face of environmental degradation, and secure the return of land to Indigenous stewardship.
    • Building Kinship and Solidarity – supporting efforts to strengthen ties between African American and Indigenous communities in the U.S. and strengthen ties between Indigenous communities across the Americas and beyond.
