Program Vision

We seek non-punitive responses to violence that treat every human being with dignity.

Program Mission

The Reimagining Public Safety Program supports work to build new systems to achieve safety, healing, and accountability by building safe communities through community-driven solutions and replacing punitive responses to violence with healing and transformation.

Program goals:

Proliferation of non-punitive responses to violence

Prioritization of healing, with crime survivors’ needs prioritized over retribution

Narrative shifts that elevate investments in communities as the main drivers of public safety

To reach our program goals we currently target our grantmaking within this program on four specific areas:

  1. Work to expand programs and policies that meet the needs of communities most affected by violence, including police violence, for example through policing alternatives such as community-based violence prevention and intervention.
  2. Work to meet the needs of the most harmed, least served and provide equitable healing.
  3. Work to expand restorative and transformative justice practices.
  4. Work that addresses intergenerational trauma caused by structural racism and state violence in the context of mass criminalization and policing.
